Be an umpire for SEFSA!

Requirements

  1. Umpires will be required to be a minimum of 12 years of age, by December 31st of the previous year of the current playing year, to be eligible to umpire. This date is what will be used to determine age.
  2. All Umpires will be required to be registered ASA.
  3. All umpires will be required to fill out a registration form from the league, for the league.
  4. Umpires will be required to have an umpire kit, consisting of a brush, counter and bag. Kits can either be purchased through the league or an outside vendor; kits will be required by the first game.

Dress Code

Minimum code:

  1. Umpire will be required to wear an umpire t-shirt and long pants for all games.
  2. Shoes must be worn (NO SANDALS PERMITTED).

Full Dress:

  1. Any umpire in full dress will receive a $1.00 bonus per game, above the base salary.
  2. Navy or gray slacks NO JEANS
  3. Light blue or navy dress or polo shirt with ASA emblem.
  4. Navy hat bearing ASA emblem.
  5. Shoes and socks NO SANDALS

Umpire Instructions

General Rules to be aware of:

  1. Know when, where, and what time you umpire.
  2. Know what age group you are umpping.
  3. You do not call UIC the day of a game and say, “I cannot ump tonight”.
  4. Check over schedule for conflicts ahead of time.
  5. If there is a conflict, contact UIC immediately.
  6. All switches must be done thru UIC only.
  7. Shorts are permitted, SEE DRESS CODE.
  8. Shirts must be tucked in.
  9. Absolutely no umpping in sandals.
  10. Checks will be cut every two weeks on Monday nights.
  11. Listen to radio for rainout information. If you are still uncertain, arrive at your diamond on time.

Pre-game Instructions:

  1. Check out the diamond. Know your foul lines and the foul area. Is the diamond ready to play?
  2. Check to ensure the bases are secured and in the correct places.
  3. Always bring all your equipment to every game. Make sure you are ready for the game.
  4. Call coaches and captains to home plate 5 minutes before game time for rules and coin flip.
  5. All bases MUST be put out and away by the umpires.
  6. All jewelry and watches must be removed.
  7. All shirts must be tucked in at all times.
  8. All caps must be worn correctly.
  9. Know your time limits. Single games no new innings after 1 hr. 20 min. Double header (first game) done at 7:20. Second game – time limit 1 hr. 20 min.

During games:

  1. Games should be started on time absolutely no late starts.
  2. Hustle.
  3. Have fun.
  4. Be heard by the coaches and fans.
  5. Between innings make sure all equipment is behind the fences.
  6. Do not be intimidated by the coaches, you can only call what you see.
  7. Listen to coach’s arguments but make your decisions based on what you feel is correct.
  8. Troublesome fans need to be addressed through the respective coaches.
  9. Should foul weather arise find UIC or a Board Member.

After game:

  1. Make sure all bases are picked up and put away!!!!!
  2. Remind coaches to clean the dugouts!!!!!
  3. All equipment is accounted for.
  4. Any problems with coaches or teams need to be brought to UIC’s attention immediately.

To be an umpire for Sioux Empire Fastpitch Softball Association (SEFSA), one must:

  • Be 12 years of age or older (as determined by their age on December 31st of the year preceding the current softball season).
  • Register with the American Softball Association (ASA) by taking the ASA Umpires Certification Test.
  • Complete an Umpire Registration Form.
  • Purchase and maintain the items needed in an umpire kit.
  • Adhere to the minimum dress code described below.

SEFSA will refund $20.00 registration fee required to take the ASA Umpire’s Certification Test to an umpire of 17 years of age or younger after umpiring five games.

The minimum dress code for an umpire requires them to wear an Umpire t-shirt, provided by the Association, pants, shoes and socks for all games. SEFSA will not permit wearing sandals to
umpire games.

SEFSA will pay a one-dollar ($1.00) bonus per game, in addition to and above the base pay, to an umpire who meets the full dress requirements by wearing the following four items at all games.

  • Navy or gray slacks (jeans will not be allowed)
  • A light blue or navy dress shirt or polo shirt bearing the ASA emblem
  • A navy hat bearing the ASA emblem
  • Shoes and socks (sandals will not be allowed)
